Here are some basics of Uhtred's background. I figure we can fill in the many plot-holes here as the story progresses:
For as far back as he could remember, Uhtred dreamed of being a member of the City Guard and signed up the day he came of age to do so. Uhtred's first decade in the guard was uneventful. It wasn't until an attack by a primitive tribe of humans attempted to invade the city that everything changed.
Durning the attack enemy soldiers broke through the first line of the section where Uhtred's unit was fighting killing his commanding officer in the process. Uhtred rallied the soldiers in his unit, reforming the line and urging the people under his command to hold firm. The enemy was beaten back with Uhtred's unit being instrumental in the victory.
Uhtred's actions brought the attention of the Order of the Unbroken Wall, the Paladin order of the Horncrest. Believing Uhtred to be blessed with the abilities of their order, he was put through their trials. Uhtred was successful and inducted into the Order.
As his first task as a member of the Order, Uhtred was given a message to be delivered to a contact in the Capital of the Kingdom. Along the way, he is to learn as much as he can about the Human civilizations outside the Great City.
Until now, Uhtred son of Uhtred (Uhtredsson) has never left the Great City of the Horncrest. Outside, he is to refer to himself as Uhtred of the Horncrest.
